Brighton has a reputation as one of the UK’s finest culinary destinations. Theatre

Brighton has a world-class theatre scene, with a grand tradition of attracting big name stars and ground-breaking productions. The Theatre Royal, which recently celebrated its 200th anniversary, plays host to a huge variety of plays, musicals, dance and comedy events. The past year has seen actors such as Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart tread its famous boards, and in its lifetime there’s scarcely an actor you can think of who hasn’t at some time passed through its doors.

Brightons Theatre Royal

The Brighton Dome, most famously the setting for ABBA’s Eurovision victory in 1974 is the city’s other main destination for arts events. This beautiful collection of buildings is the perfect setting for concerts, recitals, comedy and symphony.

The Brighton Centre is a popular destination for family events, with regular shows from some of the biggest names in entertainment – Tom Jones, Eddie Izzard, Lily Allen and Ricky Gervais are just some of the headline acts appearing over the next few months.

With its long-held reputation as a hot-bed of new talent, Brighton naturally also has a thriving independent arts scene, with many smaller theatres and venues showcasing some of the most diverse and exciting works in the country. There isn’t a night of the week when there isn’t something going on – dive in!

Shopping

If you’re a committed shopaholic then Brighton is the place for you – you’ll find all the major brands you love in the city’s Churchill Square shopping centre. For something a little more unique though, set aside some time to investigate the beautiful Laines and North Lanes districts – all within easy walking distance of Brighton Short Breaks apartments. These narrow, winding streets are a treasure trove of independent boutiques, bookstores, cafes, thrift shops and jewellers. Whether you’re looking for a bargain or intending to spend some serious cash, you’re almost guaranteed to find exactly what you’re looking for – and a few things you probably weren’t!

Festivals

Fittingly, the most diverse city in the UK is home to one of the world’s largest arts festivals. The first three weeks in May see the Brighton Festival and Fringe take over the city, with hundreds of events taking place. The transformation is magnificent to witness, as temporary venues are erected and thousands of visitors flock to

see the huge array of concerts, plays, art shows, live comedy and exhibitions. The 2009 event was by far the biggest and most successful yet, attracting rave reviews and the cream of international talent. The cultural calendar in Brighton is packed with events all year round. Other major festivals include the Brighton Comedy Festival each October, which does a spectacular job of bringing the most famous comedy acts to the city as well as unearthing the very best in new talent. If you like having your funny bone tickled then this is the one for you.

On a more highbrow note, the Clifton Montpelier Powis festival every July brings the cream of Britain’s literary and musical talent to the city for two glorious weeks, and in October the Brighton Early Music Festival showcases some of the world’s finest musicians, playing tribute to the forefathers of classical music.

Now in it’s second year, Beachdown is already well on its way to becoming one of the best music festivals in the UK. Taking place at the end of August in the breathtaking settings of the South Downs, this year’s event is headlined by the amazing Grace Jones, with The Zutons, Super Furry Animals and Saint Etienne all on an outstanding bill.

As much of a Brighton institution as the Prince Regent, Fatboy Slim rocks the city every September with Beach Boutique, an eight-hour non-stop dance music festival. Taking place right on the seafront, this feel-good event attracts thousands of eager visitors and the hottest stars in the DJing firmament.
