Self catering Brighton apartments are an excellent way to spend longer in out fantastic city at an affordable price – and whilst you’re visiting Brighton then you really shouldnt miss the Booth Museum of Natural History, just a moderate walk up Dyke Road inland.
Its a remarkable tourist attraction – and I would suggest – a great destination on a wet afternoon with the family as you can keep dry, keep and eye on the budget but also see some fascinating exhibits.
The Museums own website describe the museum as ‘quirky’ - and I thinks its fair to say this is an appropriate term. In a world where we expect museums to be engaging with lots of lights, bells and whistles, audio visual presentations with multi-media appeal, the Booth Museum is much closer to its Victorian roots and orgins – and it is that that makes it such a memorable place to visit.
The museum was started back in 1874 by Edward Booth, a passionate collector and naturalist – and his aim was simple – to have a stuffed exhibit of every British bird in Britain at that time! His passion and dedication are very evident and it is this that gives the museum its charm – there’s a very personal and individual feel to the exhibits.
Each bird is set off in its own ‘diorama’ – a display area which gives something of an insight into the birds natural habitat. Amongst the racks of diorama there’s endless charm – for instance the exhibit of the Sand Martins – beautifully positioned amongst natural looking grasses – and its amazing to think these birds were collected in 1875!
The many birds of prey also offer a real highlight and an element that the younger children will really respond to!
The museum is open 10 to 5 every day other than thursday (when its closed ) and sunday when its only open 2 till 5.
