London to Brighton Veteran Car Run
Posted on | October 23, 2009 | Comments Off
November sees the ever welcome return of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. An event of many years standing now, it never fails to please the crowds as the hundreds of entrants proudly display their lovingly maintained and restored veteran cars.
Culminating in a grand park off down on the sea front the event provides a great free show for all the family. Setting off from Hyde Park at 6.45 on the morning of the 1st of November the optimum time to see the cars fly past is generally around lunchtime along Madeira Drive.
This annual event commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896 which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This Act raised the speed limit for `light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot. Today, this run attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators.
