Brighton Short Breaks Celebrates The Duke of York Picture House

Brighton prides itself on having the oldest cinema in the UK and one of the oldest in the world! The Duke Of York’s cinema opened on 22 September 1910 and recently celebrated 95 years of entertainment!
Built on the site of the Amber Ale Brewery, and slightly outside the town centre, the cinemas fortunes have varied over the years.
The cinema has operated as an arts cinema since 1981, offering art-house movies to the intelligentsia of Brighton and Hove, and has passed through several owners and suffered various indignities including punk rock concerts. The cinema was in a shabby state when it was purchased in 1995 by City Screen who have invested in the building and returned it to its former glory.
Nowadays its efforts to make sure it appeals to as many people of possible is truly astounding! To safeguard its commercial feasibility they offer a Kids Club with special birthday party opportunities; the Big Scream, offering those parents who weren’t able to get babysitters the opportunity to see a movie with babe in arms secure in the knowledge that the crying of the baby wont disturb others: as well as the very successful annual Cinecity festival – which showcases Art-House movies from around the world. Check out there website for all their listings!
