The amazing event which is the Lewes Bonfire festival, is, sadly, a victim of its own success – and this year people are being requested to stay away!
Anyone who has ever attended the famous bonfire night celebrations knows just how well organised they are, as well as what great fun it can be. And that’s where the problem lies because the success of the event means that record attendees over the last few years and virtually brought the event to a standstill – with public transport being gridlocked and the roads closed off to traffic – to such an extent that organisers are requesting that visitors from outside the Lewes area leave the event for the pleasure of the locals!
Not only do such vast number effectively reduce the pleasure of the experience for the Lewes folk – but it also presents tremendous safety issues and policing difficulties. The website for the Lewes Bonfire Event takes their social responsibility very seriously and most of the site it aimed towards advising people how to have a successful and safe event – but I for one will be staying away this year – but wish all the good folks of Lewes a fun and successful night!
